AIM World Affairs Institute

ight GHS students were selected to attend the 48th Annual World Affairs Institute for Student Leaders, sponsored by the Monroeville Rotary. The institute took place at the Senator John Heinz History Center on Thursday, Nov. 29th. The topic of this years institute was Exploring the New Space Age. Expert speakers delivered current information relating to concerns and issues regarding space travel and planetary habitation. The students were then presented with a simulation where they had to discuss and develop a solution to a proposed problem. Student teams then presented their findings to the speakers for feedback. Each year, our local Rotarians sponsor up to eight students to attend the institute and then report back to them at a luncheon. Scholarship recipients for 2018 were: Lexi Jobe, Mohemmed Aslam, Mike Reynolds, Cherie Hill, Elisha Schoeneck, Srilekha Sapram, Naomi Fry, and Braydon Baxter.

2018 Pennsylvania Music Educator's Association Honors String Orchestra Festival

Emily Yeh and Malachi Garvin participated in the 2018 Pennyslvania Music Educator's Association Honors String Orchestra Festival. This event was held at Fox Chapel Area High School. They rehearsed and performed advanced musical literature over a 2 day period with some of the finest string-instrument players in the area. If you see Emily and Malachi, please congratulate them on a job well done.

Gateway AIM Academic Challenge Team

Congratulations to Joey Storey, Matt Hall, Cameron Guy, and Denny Yang for earning 1st place at the ESSPA Academic Challenge competition, hosted by West Mifflin HS on Thursday, November 15th. This is the 2nd year in a row we earned 1st place! The team faced challenging problems and trivia in the areas of math, science, history and general knowledge. Ben Meshanko, Tad Horomanski, Abby Secrist, Aral Muftuoglu, and Sam Alexander took the 2nd place spot by less than half a point! Denny Yang earned a 2nd place individual award and Tad Horomanski successfully defended his 1st place individual award two years in a row. A huge thank you to all the great teachers who prepared these students. This validates how strong our curriculum and instruction is here at Gateway HS. Please be sure to congratulate these students on a job well done! Next up...tryouts for the PA Academic State Championships! The consortium, Eastern Suburbs Special Programs Association (ESSPA), provides enrichment and extended educational opportunities to students in the eastern suburbs and consists of surrounding school districts in Allegheny and Westmoreland County.
